Self-Titled Record Club (STRC) is a community of music lovers who come together to celebrate the art of listening to music. Founded by Martin in 1967, STRC was born from a passion for truly experiencing and appreciating music in its purest form.
STRC can be traced back... to the suburbs of Cathays in Cardiff, Old South Wales. In June 1967, the release of the Beatles' landmark album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" marked the birth of STRC. Phil, an original member of the club, was in attendance that fateful day, and it was then that the unborn Martin McGregor received a vision that would change the course of his life forever. In this vision, the devil itself appeared to Martin, telling him that he must lead the club and assist in the preservation of the true art of music listening.
Over the course of the weekend, stories began to circulate of fans who had been so enraptured by the music that they had listened to the album repeatedly for hours on end. One such story involved the legendary Jimi Hendrix, who was said to have been so captivated by the record that he had performed a spontaneous, impromptu rendition of one of its songs.
It would be another 13 years before Martin would be born, after being trained by the devil every day, and another 33 years before the group would meet again.
Inspired by these stories and the magic of that weekend that started it all, the founders of STRC established a set of rules to ensure that all members were able to fully immerse themselves in the music and experience its power to transport them to another place and time.
Self-Titled Record Club is a place where music takes centre stage, and members are encouraged to close their eyes and let the music transport them to another place. It's a chance to truly immerse themselves in the music, to discuss and analyse it with like-minded individuals, and to appreciate it in a way that is often lost in today's world of background music. The club is not a party, but a celebration of music and its power to bring people together.
The rules are in place to facilitate a meaningful and enjoyable experience for all members, and everyone is encouraged to follow them to help ensure that the focus remains on the music. Any disobedience will be punished harshly.
The rules of Self Titled Record Club are fucking serious. Members RSVP by nominating an album to listen to on the evening, or they may opt to pick the album with the most votes.
Martin ensures that the best quality version of the album is ordered, with the price of admission being shared among the attendees.
At 7pm, the album starts and members are asked to listen to each side without any distractions or discussions. After the album ends, Martin shares some historical context and interesting facts about the album, which members use as a springboard for discussion.
The night concludes with everyone putting their name on a piece of paper and putting it into a hat. One lucky member is chosen to take the album home as a souvenir of the night. Electronics are left at the door, and only hard core music lovers, fanboys, and musicians are allowed to attend. Guests must be pre-approved. You do not want to fuck with the devil.
At Phils. We will be be selecting a brand new release and no-one is allowed to listen to it before the night. It needs to be a group virgin experience.
